Looking Back at The Style of the 6 most influential women of the decade

6 March, 2020

On International Women’s Day we can’t think of a better opportunity to spotlight the style of some the most influential female figures of the world. From music and politics to world-class athletes, the following women are game-changers in their professions and style.

Michelle Obama

Whether she’s stepping out on the red carpet or headed out for a walk with her husband, ex-president of the United States Barack Obama, Michelle Obama always manages to give an elegant look her own stylish twist.

She takes risks with bright colours and prints and isn’t afraid to add glitz to her outfits with sequins. Her favourite garment: midi cut dresses and skirts to achieve a structured and balanced silhouette.

Anna Wintour

Apart from her iconic bob haircut and sunglasses she rarely takes off, what that defines Anna Wintour and her style are her sleek, print dresses. Whether it’s midi or maxi, floral or a geometric print, lace or sequins, Ms Wintour does indeed reflect why she’s the head of the most important fashion magazine in the world.

She never wears trousers and knows how to style her slim, rectangular body shape. Her favourite garments are mid-length A-line dresses usually worn with a belt to enhance her waist. She’s the epitome of feminine, luxurious and conservative style while taking risks with colours and prints.

Oprah Winfrey

Her eclectic and versatile style has evolved from being very 80’s to becoming very glamorous, showing the world why this talk show host and author is one of the most important women in media.

She likes to enhance her femininity on the red carpet with dresses that cinch the waist, deep-v necklines and off the shoulder cuts. Winfrey knows how to dress for her body shape, so she’s been keen to adopt striking monochromatic looks and fabrics that fall to accommodate her figure. When she’s not rocking the red carpet in a glamorous gown, she has a functional, yet exquisite working girl style.

Sinead Burke

At 104 cm tall, she’s proof that being physically different does not impede having fun with fashion and making a statement.
The Irish writer and academic got her big break by giving a TED Talk about accessible design from her perspective and soon after she became known for advocating for more inclusion in fashion.

Now she can be seen rocking custom-made Gucci dresses and trendy androgynous suits in vibrant colours, as well as fun print print dresses and glamorous gowns. She’s just as fresh and stylish as any other fashionista.

Beyoncé

After a bit of experimenting with the costumes designed by her mother during her Destiny’s Child era, Beyoncé now is known for her ultra-glamorous and sexy style that truly reflects her Pop Queen persona.

With an hourglass body shape, she favours fitted cuts to show off her flawless figure. She also plays with elements that enhance her neckline, waist and legs; but not all at once to keep it classy.
