What is chic style?

21 July, 2022

Chic is a word that is often used to describe fashion and outfits, but what does it mean exactly? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, chic is “smart elegance and sophistication”, which does describe the style we’re discussing today. Chic is all about choosing appropriate quality fabrics, combining two or three colours elegantly and, generally, making you look and feel luxurious and classy.

The good part is that, strictly speaking, chic is not necessarily a style in and on itself, but a set of rules that you may apply to your own style to make it more elegant. Thus, there is a way to chic-ify your wardrobe while still remaining true to your preferences. And, most of the time, it will only take a few tasteful switches and adjustments to successfully make your outfit more chic. How does that sound?

If you want to incorporate that chic feel to your wardrobe, keep reading. We’ve gathered all the keys and inspo you need here.

What does it mean to have a chic style?

We know that every woman dreams to be the kind of girl that looks perfect without effort, on every occasion, and everywhere she goes. This is precisely what having a chic style means. Even though class and taste are sometimes innate and natural gifts, fashion has its rules and by applying them in the right way will help you be always on point. These are the 10 general rules to keep in mind to be always chic:

  • Always keep in mind the occasion you are dressing for.
  • Mix a maximum of 3 colours in your outfit.
  • If you opt for a colour block, go with neutral tones.
  • Keep in mind your silhouette and the rules to enhance it.
  • Dress according to your age.
  • Fill your wardrobe with good quality and timeless staples.
  • Don’t forget about lingerie.
  • Opt for quality over quantity.
  • Less is more.
  • Don’t follow every trend you see.

What styles can be given a chic twist?

The “chic” style is not really specific, but it can be combined with the most common ones to make them a little more refined and polished. The most common one is the “casual chic” style we always hear about; it combines the comfortable and sporty side typical of the casual with details that make it look more sophisticated.

How to create a boho chic style

It combines the boho style, with its ethnic prints, hippy details and far west remands, with a more modern side of fashion. The key to this style is to combine old with new: vintage inspired clothing with very modern shapes and fabrics. Colours should be warm, like red, orange, green, purple, blue. The patterns and prints, a reminiscence of India and Morocco.

The chic touch will be in golden details, like little beads, high quality fabrics and intricate embroideries.

How to achieve a shabby chic style

This style, mostly used in interior design, can be applied to fashion too. It is characterised by a shabby, run down look that is curated in the smallest details. It is often associated with romanticism, Provence and country style.

Here, in fashion, the white shades are the main focus that will make everything chic and elegant, but applied on raw materials. For the prints, you should go with micro flowers in pastel colours and accessories, like wooden and aged metals.

Rock chic style in action

It takes some inspiration from the rocker one, choosing items like leather jackets, skinny and ripped jeans and music references, but it adds details to these items to make them look more refined and feminine.

Choose, for example, a fairly tight-fitting leather jacket, with studs adding a touch of light. The music reference t-shirts can be cropped or tied on the waist; the skinny jeans can be ripped in the right spots, and you can add stiletto shoes instead of the typical combat boots. Accessories and jewels here are a must.

Tips for creating a romantic chic style

Very similar to the shabby chic, with the difference that it is more feminine and girly. In this style, white will be better paired with pastel colours such as pink or lilac. Details like rouches and fringes are always welcome to further boost the chic-ness of the outfit. Don’t forget to accessorise, but keep in mind that less is more. A mini purse, ecru sandals and a pair of nice, small earrings will do the trick.

How to easily create a minimal chic style

Minimal style is a really basic and linear style, characterised by neutral colours and high quality fabrics. Women that choose this style opt for good quality basics that can be combined easily with one another, as well as linear shapes that don’t emphasise the body or the curves. In the case of the minimal chic, those characteristics stay. However, you may add trendy items, mostly in the shape of accessories, that can turn a look from just minimal to minimal “with a touch”.

Just as we already mentioned, the chic style can be adapted to any style. Look how it works with the classic style!
