What is casual wear?

28 September, 2022

Clearly, whoever said ‘beauty is pain’ has never heard of casual wear – a style that is comfortable, functional, unassuming and above all, makes you feel natural and free. Who said anything about pain?

A casual look might seem like it was carelessly thrown together, but the end result is both effortless and chic. Today we’re revealing the keys to styling a flawless casual look.

Where did casual wear come from?

Casual wear emerged in America in the early 20th century, when sport was no longer considered an activity for the lower class, and socioeconomic consequences of the world wars instilled functionality as a determining factor when getting dressed.

This is when brands such as Levi Strauss, Converse and Lacoste emerged on the scene. Not to mention that it’s also when Coco Chanel liberated women from the corset and began to incorporate athletic wear in her collections. It was then that the idea that clothes should adapt to our lifestyles began to come alive.

How can women get a casual look?

Casual wear fits in our day-to-day lives, whether it’s going to the office, running errands or grabbing a happy-hour drink with friends. The key is choosing garments that are comfortable, functional and versatile enough for any of these occasions.

  • Fill your wardrobe with practical and timeless basics like T-shirts, jeans, cardigans, slightly oversized shirts and parkas.
  • Choose neutral colours like white, grey, blue, black, maroon, khaki or brown, and avoid prints in order to easily mix and match outfits.
  • Soft and elastic fabrics like denim and knit will give you the freedom to move and breathe, especially for a casual summer look.
  • Comfortable footwear is essential to finish off the look and achieve that effortless touch. Trainers, slippers, military boots, loafers or mules are a sure-fire hit.

Casual style icons

It is one of the styles we see most on the street, because it is easy to combine and comfortable, but some women know how to wear it like no one else and make the most of it. Here we leave you some examples of women with different styles and figures that take the casual style to their personal style, without leaving aside the latest trends:

  • Dakota Johnson: The perfect example of how to incorporate the trends of the time into the casual sphere.
  • Katie Holmes: By combining casual outfits and accessories with natural hairstyles – all without make-up, Katie turns everything she touches into a casual chic sensation.
  • Mila Kunis: Her ultimate goal is comfort, and it shines through in all of her looks.
  • Alexa Chung: She’s not afraid to take risks with her edgy yet simple streetwear.

What are the key pieces to create casual looks?

As we mentioned before, one of the clear objectives of casual fashion is comfort, freedom of movement and adaptability to the greatest range of occasions in our day-to-day lives. But let’s see what pieces you can’t miss in your wardrobe to create timeless casual looks, according to our Personal Shoppers.

Trousers and casual jeans

Denim is the beating heart of the casual style, so it must be in your wardrobe if you want to achieve this look; some think it was invented in Italy, more specifically in Genoa; some are sure that the first denim was spotted among cowboys in the USA, and others say they were actually invented by accident in Nîmes, France.

In any case, denim is an item that can be adapted to every silhouette and can enhance every body type; you just need to choose the right model for you! Skinny jeans are evergreen and even if someone might say they are dead, we keep wearing them to drive attention to legs and highlight them. Flared and boot cut trousers are perfect for triangle women who want to balance the silhouette and look fabulous. Wide legs are the comfiest and the trendiest right now, especially for young women.

T-shirts and tops for an informal look

When we talk about casual style for the upper part, the first thing that comes to mind is a good T-shirt. It’s an item you can have fun and play with. Collect them in different colours, with messages printed on the front, striped, or with prints, they are fully adaptable to your personality.

The most important thing is to choose the right neckline for your body type; if you have a short bust or large breasts, a V-neck will help you to extend that area optically. On the other hand, closed necklines will help you balance the silhouette if you have a long bust or a flat chest. Besides necklines, you can choose what sleeve and fabrics fits you best: cotton, for sure, is the most common one, but you can choose a t-shirt with a little polyester in it to have a stretch and more fitted model.

Keep it casual, even in a skirt

To embrace the casual style doesn’t mean to wear just trousers and denim; skirts can be casual too. If denim is the core of this style, the denim skirt can be the right choice when you want to show your legs and mix femininity with sportiveness. Then we have the knitted skirts, ideal especially for autumn/winter and to be styled with a T-shirt and sneakers. However, these can be risky, so wear it if you don’t want your hips to be at the centre of attention. Lastly, the midi skirt can be the perfect item to enhance your silhouette and your waist while being super comfortable. Wear it with trainers for a full casual look.

Comfortable and practical casual dresses

The right dresses for this style are also the ones that can be worn by everyone because they are super flattering and comfortable. For example, the shirt dress is a must-have to enhance the silhouette thanks to the belt on the waist and the details on the right places. For the most feminine ones, you can wear the knitted dress, ideal both for the day and for the night: wear it with trainers, and you’re ready to go to work, or pair it with ankle boots and a biker for a night out. The last one we suggest is the wrap dress, but in a long version: we love it with sneakers or boots, and it can add a romantic touch to your casual style.

Casual outwear that you can’t miss in everyday wardrobe

Of course, denim is still present in this section. The denim jacket is a must-have for every casual woman. Choose the fit according to your age and body type and play with different colours; classic blue will never go out of style, but you can choose a coloured one to wear with basic looks.

The trench coat is a classic of our wardrobe and the fun part of it is that you can adapt it to every style: for casual women, it can be paired with jeans and a pullover.

You don’t expect to see the blazer in the list of casual outwear because it’s an item from the classic style. However, the blazer has become a super used garment for casual looks too. In fact, it looks great with denim and a t-shirt!

How to master casual style

  • Invest in high-quality basics that you can wear year after year.
  • Avoid clothes that wrinkle easily or don’t handle the wash well.
  • If you wear make-up, choose a more subtle or natural look. A little eyeliner or a touch of dusty pink on your lips is all you need to feel your best.
  • Don’t wear tight trousers and narrow hemlines
  • Comfort walks a fine line between style and disaster. Beware of excess.
  • Update your wardrobe! Basics also go out of style.
  • Draw the attention to your legs.
  • DStay away from bright colours and you’ll have no problem mixing and matching.

How to wear casual style in your 30s

The casual look for a woman in her 30s is simple and comfortable, which adapts to her dynamic life always on the run. Play with the denim’s model, choosing a boot cut or a flared one, and pair it with a simple jumper. Add a touch of fun with coloured flats: these shoes will be perfect for running errands all day.

How to wear casual style in your 40s

In your 40s, you may want to be comfy but stylish, so we suggest wide leg/straight denim that will let your legs breathe during the day. Match a white shirt with some details: we don’t want the outfit to look dreary! Lastly, bring with you a denim jacket, fantastic from morning to night.

How to wear casual style in your 50s

Is it possible to look stylish, classic and evergreen in your 50s? Yes, with this look. Choose your favourite denim; it may be skinny, because we know you love them. Now, pair the denim with a simple white t-shirt. Too basic? Add a blazer in a colourful shade; we chose this peach tint, which looks great for autumn!

How to wear casual style in your 60s

Who said you can’t be stylish after your 60s? It is the right time to shine! We suggest you choose a simple shirt dress, as they are comfortable and help you enhance your silhouette. If you’re not comfortable showing legs, you can opt for a longer version too! Style it with sneakers and a leather backpack and be ready for every occasion.

A casual look for autumn/winter

The two looks we propose are very different, but belong to the same style. This goes to show you that you can really adapt it to your mood and to your personal lifestyle.

The first one is perfect for women with a dynamic lifestyle, who never stop running around the city, between work, kids and errands. It’s composed of the perfect pair of denim (yes, the ones your Personal Shopper found for you, and now you can’t stop wearing) and a turtleneck: a simple combination made special by adding the trench, a must-have for autumn.

The second, a more feminine and perfect to add a romantic but classy touch to your wardrobe. As we saw, the denim skirt is a fantastic alternative to jeans when you want to show your legs. Now, try to match it with a jumper, and add a checked blazer for the perfect casual, and maybe a little preppy, look!

Casual look for spring/summer

Casual style knows no seasonality, and it can be adapted to your spring/summer wardrobe too. Here again, two looks for two different women (or maybe the same woman in different moments of the week). The first one is fresh, a boost of vitamin and colour: the white denim paired with a printed blouse, could be a simple match; but try to add a coloured denim jacket which will change everything!

If you’re looking for the perfect look to go to the office in springtime, there you go: white denim, which as you can see is a must for the season, and a white t-shirt. Break the total look by adding a trench and a pop of colour with a foulard. Love at first sight for us!
