They’re a staple of your wardrobe, but there are so many types of skirt and so many ways to wear them, that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Worry not, we’re here with your A, B, C of skirts to make it easy as 1,2,3. Come on, let’s dive right in.

A-line skirt

What is it?

A classic for your wardrobe, A-line skirts are usually fitted at the hips and fall to the knees, gradually widening towards the bottom, following a bell-shaped curve.

line A skirt

Perfect for…

You if you want to disguise your hips, while boosting your waistline. It’s also great for harmonising your look if you have an inverted triangle silhouette. It’s perfect for your figure because it creates curves if you don’t have them and boosts them if you do.

Style Tip

Always wear your top inside the skirt, if not completely in front. If the look isn’t working for you, fold the top up slightly for a more casual finish.

Asymmetric skirt

What is it?

Its most common feature is of course its asymmetry. So whatever the length, an Asymmetric skirt gives your silhouette depth and reduces volume.

Perfect for…

You if you want to highlight your legs. By creating a longitudinal and inclined line you can stylise the lower portion of your body. Keep it simple for the biggest impact.

Style tip

Asymmetrical skirts are usually great for their minimal and contemporary touch, perfect for styles like boho or romantic.

Pencil Skirt

What is it?

Pencil skirts are adjusted to the body, feature a high waist and fall to, or just below, the knees. They give a sophisticated, formal look, but also work well with a casual style.

Perfect for…

You if you have an hourglass silhouette. Pencil skirts will take full advantage of your curves.

Style tip

It’s an unbeatable classic, but be aware of its length and how much elasten it has. It’s important you can move easily.

Long/Maxi Skirt

What is it?

A Maxi skirt is any skirt whose length falls between the bottom of your calf and the floor.

Perfect for…

You if you want to add a little more verticality, visually lengthening your silhouette. It’s perfect if you’re a petite size, just add wedges and your legs look twice as long.

Style tip

A Maxi skirt either flared, with prints, smooth or knit will refresh your wardrobe with confidence.

Midi skirt

What is it?

A Midi skirt one whose hem falls, more or less, between the knee and halfway to the calf.

Perfect for…

You if you’re looking for a nice, discreet length. Ideal when you want to show your more ladylike side, whatever your character. You can find it in many materials and styles.

Style tip

We love Midi skirts for autumn with a masculine-cut shirt and high-leg leather boots. For the cold days, wear a shirt with a swan-neck jumper, embrace your inner Meghan Markle.

Pleated Skirt

What is it?

Pleating transforms fabric by folding and applying pressure, so that when unfolding it has a pleated texture. The great Mariano Fortuny patented the method in 1909, sparking an excitement then that continues to enchant to this day.

Perfect for…

You if you need extra volume below the waist.

Style tip

Look at the way the Pleated skirt falls. When we dress we all too often forget about the movement of our clothes and these fluid, long pieces really catch the eye when you move.

Skater Skirt

What is it?

Tight at the waist and all about the hem. Skater skirts take their name from the skirts worn by skaters/rollergirls. The Skater skirt has much more height than an A-line skirt and is usually much shorter.

Perfect for…

You if you have either a triangular, or inverted triangular silhouette. Skater skirts are great at disguising volume.

Style tip

The Skater skirt can look a little childish, but just combine it with either masculine or oversize pieces to tone that down a little.

Slip skirts

slip skirt

What is it?

Raso, or slip skirts, first swept into our wardrobes in the ’90s and are now coming back stronger than ever. Its strengths include its impeccable cut, its ultra-modern and comfortable fabric, its sensuality and its rebellious spirit.

Perfect for…

You, whatever your silhouette. Its shape makes it easy to play with your waistline.

Style tip:

Watch out for the fabric, it’s notorious for marking other materials. Even your underwear.

Wrap Skirt

What is it?

Like its famous namesake, the wrap-around dress, the Wrap skirt is characterized by its wraparound closure that surrounds the waist, with an opening at the front. It’s comfortable, casual and easy to wear.

Perfect for…

You if you’re looking for a skirt that feels good and is timeless but trendy. It’s also perfectly adaptable so your choices are almost endless.

Style tip:

Make sure your skirt doesn’t move from your waist. Sometimes wrap skirts can get pulled downwards and the drawstring is at the waist, but the skirt sits lower, it makes it a little uncomfortable and doesn’t look right.
