Summer is for lightweight fabrics, but also for wide fits. And wide leg trousers, palazzo trousers specifically, are a must for this season. We want to dive into this category to find out where they come from and how to wear them. Let’s go!
What are palazzo trousers?
The palazzo trousers are characterised by a high-waisted fit, they are tighter on the waist and get wider on the legs. They are usually foot-length and hide the shoes.
There is a wide range of variety, especially in the fabric used. They can be made of wool (perfect for winter), cotton or linen (to wear in warmer seasons), but also of silk or satin fabrics (these ideal for night outs). On top of this, there are other distinguished features, such as pockets, darts, or buttons.
To get to the first woman who wore trousers, we have to wait for the end of the 19th century, the period of rebellion and the struggle for female emancipation. The first woman to cause a “scandal” about this was Amelia Bloomer, followed by the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt, who wore them on stage in the early 1900s. Yet, to wait for the real revolution of women’s trousers, we still had to wait for her, the magnificent Coco Chanel, who, with her avant-garde gaze, created the first designs of women’s trousers between the two World Wars. Soft and wide, they were designed for women who had to work to make up for the absence of men at the front. After decades in which women’s trousers tended to become increasingly narrow, Yves Saint Laurent launched the first model of palazzo trousers in the spring of 1968. These were the years of freedom and passion, so the French designer decided to enhance the female figure not for her curves, but for her femininity. He therefore chose a model that is tight at the waist to highlight the hips, but wide on the lower body to allow for a greater range of movement and, above all, to enhance the length of the legs, which has been hidden for too long.
Palazzo trousers for each body type
Without any doubt, the palazzo trousers are perfect for anyone who wants to enhance the waistline and minimise the hips and legs. It’s the ideal model for triangle and hourglass body shapes, but this doesn’t mean that the other women can’t wear them. Inverted triangles can opt for models that have many details or are printed, in order to drive the attention away from the upper body. Rectangles can wear palazzo trousers with a big belt, enhancing the waistline. And last but not least, ovals, who usually have amazing legs, can opt for cropped ones. The bottom line here is: everyone can wear everything, just find what suits you best!
Great summer looks with palazzo trousers
Now that you know everything about palazzo trousers, you can start creating your summer looks. We know you are here to look for inspiration, so there you go!
Summer look in black palazzo trousers
Black is a colour that we suggest avoiding in summer, but if you really can’t go without it, you can always wear at night. Our pick would be a look composed by black palazzo trousers and a very feminine lingerie top. Complete the look with black sandals to create a continuity and add a pop of colour with the bag. Daring and fun, just how we like it.
Stay cool in white palazzo trousers
White palazzo trousers are perfect if you want to look classy this summer. They give an “old money”/preppy vibe that is ideal for a stylish summer and beachwear look. We would opt for a total look in the shades of white, ecru, beige and brown: a very calming combination that will express chicness and elegance.
Bold summer look with printed palazzo trousers
You can never go wrong with printed palazzo trousers in summer, especially if the colours of the print are bold and the motifs reminiscent of tropical destinations. However, you may want to avoid them if highlighting your hips and legs is not your thing. Otherwise, feel free to match them with a cute top and sandals, you’re ready for the beach!
Vibrant palazzo trousers for a perfect summer look
We’re always in for a bright-coloured outfit, especially at this time of the year. We suggest you try this look: bright yellow palazzo trousers, matched with a printed top in the same shades. Complete with a green bag (yes, we’re going for bold here) and comfortable sandals. Summer vibes galore!
