Where beauty and functionality meet, a new style is born: the utility style. Seen on the catwalks and revisited by every influencer worldwide, this practical yet trendy way of dressing is particularly in vogue this year. As cargo pants and jackets with a million pockets make a comeback, we’re ready to reveal all the secrets of utility style. Read on to find out what to wear and how to wear it.
What is utility style?
The term historically appeared during World War II, as the UK introduced a rationing scheme in response to a shortage of clothing materials. In times of austerity, the English Board of Trade then promoted the creation of “utility clothing” that met strict standards for the amount of material and labour used for their manufacture: in fact, it was not only fabrics, wool and leather that were in short supply, but also the manufacturers, as much of the skilled labour force was occupied at the front. The items produced were very practical and suitable for different tasks, making the most of the space allowed by the fabric, with pockets, hoods and other components.
All these functional features are taken to the extreme today, merging, in fact, with the form: the occupations that inspire this aesthetic are many, from mechanics to fishermen, reflected both in the choice of silhouettes and colours, with a preference for navy blue, black and neutral greys and browns.
The utility style on the catwalks
Utilitarian references in high-end clothing date back to the 1960s, when Yves Saint Laurent reimagined the fisherman’s peacoat, offering an example of how workwear and luxury clothing could play an incredible duo. Lately, utilitarian garments have continued to conquer the catwalks: from Dior, where utility style has taken on an empowered meaning for women, to the latest collections for spring/summer 2023: Miu Miu brought saddlebags and maxi pockets tied at the waist to the catwalk, with references to 90s Prada, and cargo pants were the stars of the season, from LaQuan Smith to Givenchy, via Coperni and Isabel Marant.
Items that identify the utility style
Utility style is capable of unifying sustainability and coolness, because it implies the use of good quality and durable garments that will last in your wardrobe forever. Also, it is very recognisable, not only because of the details we have already mentioned, such as pockets, belts, drawstrings, but also because of the garments themselves. Let’s see which ones:
- Cargo pants: the first choice when talking about utility style and uniform. Cargo pants are on trend right now, distinguished by a lot of pockets (large, small, medium). They are usually seen in a slim fit and in neutral colours (khaki, beige), but now we are spoilt for choice: you can find them in all colours, materials and cuts.
- Jacket: no cargo pants without a matching jacket that combines perfectly with the utility vibe. Here you will also find plenty of pockets, drawstrings and belts. All the details that come from military jackets and uniforms. A practical and versatile garment, perfect for spring.
- Denim shirt: if we talk about practical clothing, the denim shirt is surely one of the first to come to mind. A timeless wardrobe staple that never falls out of fashion, you can also wear it unbuttoned, with a T-shirt underneath.
- Boots: looking at the military and work world, the most used footwear would be combat boots, for sure. These signature boots have become very popular lately, and have been spotted on every influencer’s feet. You can wear them with your cargo pants, but also with dresses and skirts.
- XXL bags: accessories should also follow the practical vibe, so go for big bags (maybe with pockets too), backpacks and everything that would leave your hands free and allow you to move around freely.
Ideal looks to wear the utility style
Customise utility style by taking inspiration from these looks chosen by our Personal Shoppers.
Look 1
This first look is all about cargo pants, but we wanted to give them a more feminine and wearable touch for actual real life occasions. We teamed them with a nice blouse and sandals. Pro-tip: choose a v-neck blouse and wear a lace top underneath for a romantic and sexy touch!
Look 2
Who said utilitarian style can’t be worn in a more feminine way? Just pair your jacket (yes, the one full of pockets) with a midi dress, either in a solid colour or a patterned one. If you choose the print, make sure the shades of the print match the colour of the jacket. Complete the look with sandals and you’re ready to go!
Look 3
Practical and versatile, this last look is a mix of straight-leg white jeans and a simple black T-shirt. The star in this look is the jacket, which should be buttoned to draw all the attention to itself. Top it off with combat boots and a large shoulder bag.
As you’ve seen, many of these items are probably already part of your spring/summer wardrobe. Missing any of them to complete your favourite look from this selection? Remember that you can always ask your Personal Shopper for advice to incorporate utility looks in your next Lookiero.
